Anti-grounding safety pixel: what does it mean?

Virtual Regatta provides the coastline to within 1 pixel. This allows us to reproduce it exactly and prevent the routing from approaching the coast to within 1 pixel. This is particularly useful when routing has to navigate through narrow passages between islands.

The “Anti-grounding safety pixel” setting is in Settings > Routing, among the Expert mode settings (reserved for Premium subscribers). It is on by default. When it is on:

  • a target within 1 pixel of the coast is refused: “The routing target is too close to land…” (it is displayed in green);
  • a boat within 1 pixel of the coast gets the message “The routing failed as your boat is too close to shore…”.

If you turn it off, a warning reminds you when you send the orders that a point of the routing is within one pixel of land, and that we cannot guarantee that your boat will not run aground, even with waypoints.
